Kinfolk, Start Your Engines!!!
We’re ‘Bout To Throw Down In Motown!
For the 2016 Huguely Family Reunion, we’re headed to the Motor City with intentions of throwing down like never before! After a fantastic reunion last summer in Lexington, the Detroit Planning Team, aka ‘Detroit Divas’, not to be outdone, is raising the steaks, I mean stakes, in the place known for its cars, music, style, fashion, hipness, ‘The Queen of Soul’, Belle Isle, ‘The Bad Boys’, and Faygo Red Pop – Detroit!
Planned activities for our 62nd Huguely Reunion begin with northern cuisine (‘Taste of Detroit’) sampling and a chill-out session while trying your hand at painting, berets and smocks not included, followed by a local free Smooth Jazz concert. I just know someone in the Huguely family is going to be channeling Ernie Barnes or Jean-Michel Basquiat, and hopefully NOT Vincent Van Gough, you hEAR me? All the while, the youngsters will be away dealing with the ups and downs in life, literally, on various-sized trampolines, combined with thrilling, healthy fun. Having witnessed this first hand (NOT as a participant), it’s totally awesome, Dude!!!
Taking a tour Saturday morning of downtown Detroit, which is going through a major revitalization, with several new construction projects underway (e.g., Red Wings hockey stadium, street car rail system, apartments, townhomes, retail shops, coffee shops, bike lanes, Nike store, River Walk promenade, etc.) is something to behold and not to be missed.
And the Saturday afternoon picnic at a nearby recreational park, a long-time ‘old school’ Huguely tradition, promises even more great food, activities, and lots of family fun & games, as well as 2016 Huguely Scholarship Award presentations.
That Saturday night, perhaps the highlight of this year’s reunion, is the “White Party” (no, not a GOP hootenanny), where everyone gets sharp – Detroit-style, clean, dressed to the nines, dressed to impress, ladies get their hair did and nails done, men practice their Temptations dance steps, ready to cut a rug, and where that pronounced limp now becomes a cool stride… “Man, check out Uncle Willie’s walk! Cuz is too cool, ain’t he? I’m hip!! Sho’ you right!” And where a man’s orthopedic cane now becomes quite a fashionable ‘walking stick’ a la Ronald Isley’s ‘Mr. Biggs’… Work it, Brah! The White Party will feature the soulful spin master of sound, DJ Ricky Love, on the 1’s and 2’s, sonically putting it down. The Huguely women will look phenomenal, the Huguely men will look regal, and together, we’ll party like it’s 1999. Yep, I’m definitely planning to stay up past my bedtime! Zzzzzzzz…
Come Sunday morning, “Reveille” and “Wake Up, Everybody” will get you out of bed, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, and offer you a chance to getcha’ praise on, Hallelujer!, at church nearby before the customary Huguely Business Meeting at the hotel, including the election of Huguely Officers.
So there you have it, a great time planned for 2016. The Detroit Divas have done it again!
Thanks and looking forward to seeing everyone in Detroit!!! Safe travels!
