For the 2017 Huguely Family Reunion, we’re headed back to Washington, D.C. after 20 years, not only to tour the White House and Arlington National Cemetery, rather to stay a while, check out the digs, and reflect upon our past. Yes, indeed, the city has changed tremendously in 20 years: bicycle lanes, coffee shops, and dog grooming salons…
With so many exciting things to do in this major tourist city, and in keeping with city’s democratic charter, we shall be ‘judicious’ with your time, make ‘executive’ decisions where to go next, and ‘legislate’ a mandate to have a wonderful and unforgettable time.
Our host hotel, Capitol Holiday Inn, is located within minutes of the historic National Mall (no, not a retail shopping area!) so that you’ll be virtually steps, a subway ride, or a bus ride away from the National Air & Space Museum, L’Enfant Plaza, Washington Monument, White House, and U.S. Capitol, as well as in close proximity to new museums, memorials, and attractions built since 1997, including the National Museum of African American History and Culture, World War II Memorial, Martin Luther King Memorial, Wharf Waterfront, Carolina’s Kitchen (family dinner), and National Harbor – home to Tanger Outlets and the recently opened MGM Casino & Resort (cha-ching!!!).
As if that weren’t enough to keep you busy, in the evening, as an alternative to just ‘chill out’ (aka take a nap) at the hotel, Washington, D.C.’s nightlife presents a plethora of hard choices:
• Night Club locales: Gallery Place, U Street, Adams Morgan, Georgetown
• Jazz Clubs: Blues Alley, Twins, Columbia Station
• Plays: Arena Stage, Studio Theatre, Woolly Mammoth
• Concerts: Howard Theatre, 9:30 Club
• Poetry/Spoken Word: Busboys and Poets
• Baseball/Bowling: Washington Nationals baseball, Lucky Strike
• Movies: Landmark, AMC, and Regal Theaters
Yes, it’s called a ‘Capitol City’ for a reason. So many things to do, so little time…
But, have no fear! Our democracy WILL survive despite political chaos, party opposition, and citizen protest – and I’m just talking about the chartered bus ride from Lexington/Richmond, Kentucky!!! After two days of touring and three nights of hanging out, we’ll certainly come together and settle our differences (and fellowship) during the Sunday morning prayer session and business meeting… Let’s KEEP our Huguely Reunion great, once again!!! Yes, we can!
Looking forward to seeing everyone in August! Safe travels.
Kenneth A. Cobb
President, Huguely Family Reunion
